What gates AI Overview inclusion (per Google, not per us)

Google's own documentation is unambiguous: a page that isn't indexed and extractable can't appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode — AI features retrieve from the index like search does (Google: AI features and your website). Its generative-summaries patent describes answers composed from retrieved passages — the unit of citation is the extractable passage (US11886828B1).

Which is exactly the 5-signal layer: crawler reachability, robots access, llms.txt, schema, answer-first structure. In our own crawl, only 8.5% of the Tranco top-1,000 serve a spec-valid llms.txt (the data study) — the readiness layer is genuinely neglected.

How do I check if my pages appear in AI Overviews?

Why did my page disappear from an AI Overview?
