GA4 uses RE2 and matches Session source partially — this pattern is ready to paste as a “matches regex” condition.
3 · Use it in GA4
- Explorations (fastest): Explore → blank exploration → add filter → dimension Session source → condition matches regex → paste. Add Sessions, Engaged sessions, Conversions as metrics.
- Custom channel group (permanent): Admin → Data display → Channel groups → create channel AI assistants with rule Session source matches regex → paste. New sessions classify from that day forward (not retroactive).
- Comparison in standard reports: any report → Add comparison → include Session source matching the same regex.
Honest caveats: assistants open many links with no referrer at all (apps, some private
sessions), so this segment is a floor, not a ceiling. Referrer hostnames drift —
this list is what we observe as of July 2026. Google's AI Overviews traffic arrives as
google / organic and cannot be isolated by referrer at all.
Counting AI referrals is step one. Whether engines actually cite you is what the free 5-signal check and Monitor measure — and if you'd rather your robots.txt never silently kills that traffic, put it on watch.
