# GSVO (Generative Search Visibility Optimization)

GSVO stands for Generative Search Visibility Optimization. It is Otterly.ai's label for GEO, or generative engine optimization. Both name one job. You earn brand citations inside AI answers. Think ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. GSVO is Otterly's coinage. It is not a standard.

## Where the term came from

One vendor uses the label. That vendor is Otterly.ai, an AI-search tool. This project crawled 381 pages from eight GEO vendors. The term shows up on one of them. It is Otterly's own GEO guide. No rival vendor prints it.

The trail is short. The word surfaces in just two places, both on Otterly's site. The GEO guide uses it in prose. One more post cites that guide by its link. That is the whole record.

That guide lists five labels for the same shift. It spells each one out. It never defines the term apart from GEO. One heading fuses the pair: "Brand as the new currency of GEO / GSVO." So the two read as synonyms.

The label shows up nowhere else. We found it in zero SERP snapshots. We found it in zero forum threads. Our niche map logs the coinage as Otterly's. As of the July 2026 crawl, it is a vendor term. The field has not taken it up. It belongs to the niche's [emerging terminology](/glossary/).

## GSVO vs GEO, AEO, and the other acronyms

The niche mints terms faster than it agrees on them. Coining one is cheap. It stakes an early claim to a slot. Otterly's guide alone lists five labels for one job.

GEO means Generative Engine Optimization. It is the academic, most-used term. AEO means Answer Engine Optimization. It aims at short, direct answers. GSVO means Generative Search Visibility Optimization. It is Otterly's synonym for GEO. GSO means Generative Search Optimization. It is rarer still. AIO means AI Optimization. It clashes with GAIO, Google's AI Overviews. [LLMO](/glossary/llmo/) means Large Language Model Optimization. It aims at the model, not the engine.

The work underneath stays the same. You feed engines clean, citable facts. They pull passages through retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG. They ground each answer in what they pull, a step called grounding. Semantic triples and entity SEO help them read your facts. Success is scored by citation share, not by rankings. The label you pick does not change the work.

Only GEO has a paper behind it. That paper is arXiv:2311.09735, from November 2023. GEO also has a Wikipedia entry and cross-vendor use. It has one blog.

Note what the name is not. It says "visibility." Yet it marks the work, not a number. The metric that scores the work is [AI share of voice](/glossary/ai-share-of-voice/).
